If you have a Garmin GPS unit you can get free 24k topo maps at the GPS Files Depot or you can also get them at Open Street.
The Garmin Dakota Wiki is a good place to get answers to all of your GPS questions, as is GPS Track Log.
You may also want to check out the POI Factory.
GPS Visualizer is a cool site where you can upload a GPS file and it will overlay it on top of a Google Map.
GPS Files Depot has a nice tutorial on the steps to show and hide maps for Garmin units. The tutorial is here.
To Geotag photos:
1) Import photos to PC
2) Connect Dakota, start BaseCamp
3) In BaseCamp under devices select the Dakota "All Data" folder
4) Find the track (should be "Current Track" if you didn't save it under another name)
5) Right click it and select "Geotag Photos using track..."
6) Select the folder where the photos are, and follow the prompts.
